Bumblefoot in Chickens: Identification, Treatment and Prevention

What Bumblefoot Is and How It Starts

Chicken bumblefoot, known clinically as pododermatitis, is a bacterial footpad infection. It usually begins when Staphylococcus aureus or a similar bacterium enters through a small cut, splinter wound, or abrasion in the skin (Merck Veterinary Manual, n.d.). Heavier birds are more prone to the initial injury that lets bacteria in, but bumblefoot takes time to develop into a full abscess. Broilers are processed at five to seven weeks, too soon for this to progress, so most cases occur in birds that live for months, such as breeders and layers.

Identifying Severity, From Early Signs to Advanced Cases

Early bumblefoot looks like mild redness or a slightly hardened patch on the foot pad. As the infection develops, swelling increases, a dark scab forms over a pus filled core, and affected birds may limp or avoid standing (Shepherd and Fairchild, 2010). In advanced cases, infection spreads into tendons or joints, causing severe lameness and reluctance to move.

Matching Bumblefoot Treatment to Severity

Bumblefoot treatment depends on how far the infection has progressed. Mild cases often respond to a clean, dry environment and topical antiseptic care alone. Moderate lesions typically need soaking, debridement, and bandaging, sometimes with antibiotics from a veterinarian. Severe cases with a deep necrotic core usually require surgical removal of the infected tissue (Today’s Veterinary Practice, n.d.). In large commercial flocks, individual surgery is rarely practical. Management instead focuses on correcting litter and housing conditions, and affected birds are typically kept and managed, with culling reserved for birds that can no longer walk.

The Link Between Bumblefoot and Flock Performance

Footpad lesions are not just a welfare concern, they measurably affect production. Wet litter induced footpad dermatitis has been shown to reduce overall welfare, technical performance, and carcass yield in broiler chickens (de Jong et al., 2014). Painful feet discourage birds from walking to feeders and drinkers, which can slow growth and widen weight variation across a flock (Shepherd and Fairchild, 2010).

Weight Data as an Early Warning System

Because footpad dermatitis suppresses feeding activity, changes in body weight can confirm a footpad problem before it becomes visible across a large flock. During routine sessions on the BAT1 manual poultry scale, handlers weigh birds individually and can inspect each foot at the same time, catching early lesions during the process itself.

Pairing this individual attention with continuous flock weight monitoring gives producers both the sample integrity of a hands-on check and the coverage of an always-on system, rather than relying on either alone.

Prevention and Ongoing Monitoring in Layer and Breeder Flocks

Prevention still matters most: dry, well managed litter, appropriate stocking density, and suitable perch design all reduce the abrasions that lead to bumblefoot (Mayne et al., 2007). In layer and parent stock operations, where birds are kept for much longer production cycles than broilers, chronic bumblefoot linked to prolonged perching is a recurring concern. Because birds are already being handled and separated by weight during routine grading on the BAT1 Sorting Machine, this is a convenient additional point to check footpads without adding a separate handling step.
