Vent Gleet in Commercial Flocks: From Causes to Treatment

Vent gleet is a keeper’s term, not a veterinary one. The clinical name is cloacitis, which simply means the cloaca is inflamed. The cloaca is what most people are pointing at when they talk about the chicken’s vent, the single opening that droppings, urates and eggs all come out of.

That matters, because the name describes what you can see rather than what is wrong. A crusted, discharging vent can come from a yeast overgrowth, a bacterial infection, weeks of sitting in wet litter, or damage from other birds pecking at it.

What vent gleet actually is

Most accounts blame Candida albicans, and often they are right. But Candida lives in the gut of healthy birds as a matter of course. It only causes disease once something has upset the normal balance of organisms there (Nicholds, 2023).

That is why a swab result on its own means very little. Candida can be cultured from clinically normal birds, so a positive result confirms nothing by itself (Nicholds, 2023). Swabbing the beak cavity, crop and cloaca of 580 turkeys turned up seven different Candida species (Sokół et al., 2020). Gross lesions can point to avian candidiasis, but confirming it means seeing the fungus growing into the tissue itself (Nicholds, 2023).

What causes vent gleet in chickens

The things that set off candidiasis are well known. It commonly follows a course of antimicrobials or comes from unsanitary drinkers. A heavy parasite burden and a shortage of vitamin A have also been implicated (Nicholds, 2023).

Commercial housing brings problems of its own. In one broiler field study, soiled cloaca was scored alongside foot pad and feather condition, and it followed the same age-related pattern as soiled feathering (Hinz et al., 2019). A dirty vent stays wet, and skin that stays wet stops being much of a barrier.

Pecking is the other route in. When a hen lays, the mucosa of the vent is briefly exposed, and other birds are drawn to the red tissue and peck at it. Overweight pullets coming into lay show this more (Crespo, 2023). Once the skin is broken, infection follows easily. Flocks that vent peck also see more prolapses (Crespo, 2023).

Vent gleet symptoms in a commercial flock

The vent gleet symptoms everyone describes are a pasted, discharging vent, crusting on the feathers underneath and red, sore-looking skin around the opening. In a house of twenty thousand birds, you do not see that on one hen. You see it once it has spread.

What you can actually measure is feed intake, and then weight.

This is why handling birds matters. A weighing round with the BAT1 manual poultry scale puts every sampled bird in your hands, so you can look at the vent and feel the fleshing while you take the weight.

How to treat vent gleet in chickens

Start with a veterinary diagnosis, not with a product. Nystatin is the drug described for candidiasis in poultry. In turkeys, 110 g per tonne of feed for seven to ten days has been reported as effective, and no equivalent figure is given for chickens. In some countries no product is licensed for this use, so it is off-label (Nicholds, 2023).

Fixing what caused it matters more than the antifungal. Better sanitation and more careful use of antimicrobials address the disruption that let the overgrowth happen (Nicholds, 2023).

Then check that it has worked. If you already have daily weight readings coming off the flock, the clearest sign of recovery is growth picking back up to the rate it should be.

Keeping an eye on vent health across the flock

Weight and uniformity are useful early warnings. In a study of 100 pullet flocks, an automatic Veit BAT2 scale in each barn recorded both figures as part of a routine health check, so that problems could be picked up early (Mels et al., 2023).
