Getting light stimulation timing right: the body weight thresholds that protect flock output

Light stimulation is one of the most consequential management decisions in breeder production, and the research is clear: timing it to body weight and flock uniformity, rather than age alone, is what separates consistent reproductive performance from avoidable losses.

The weight and uniformity thresholds that determine readiness

Breeders should not receive light stimulation before 20 to 21 weeks of age at the earliest. More importantly, the flock must have reached a target body weight of 2150g before stimulation begins. Age alone is an insufficient guide. A flock that has reached the minimum week but not the minimum weight is not ready.

Uniformity is equally critical. The coefficient of variation (CV) across the flock must be below 7% at the point of stimulation. A CV above this threshold indicates that a meaningful proportion of birds have not developed adequately, and stimulating a non-uniform flock means a proportion of hens will enter the reproductive phase in a physiologically compromised state. Uneven sexual maturity across the flock is a direct consequence, and it undermines production consistency throughout the laying cycle.

What happens during the 16–20 week growth phase

The period between 16 and 20 weeks is when the biological foundations for successful reproduction are laid. During this window, the flock needs to achieve 33 to 35% weight gain relative to earlier benchmarks. That gain is not simply a matter of mass. It reflects the progression of fat deposition, frame development, and body composition changes that prepare hens for the hormonal demands of egg production.

Monitoring weight gain rate and flock spread during this phase provides the earliest warning of flocks that may not meet stimulation criteria on schedule.

Identifying underperforming subpopulations before stimulation week gives producers the opportunity to adjust management and recover uniformity before a consequential decision is made.

Consequences of stimulating at suboptimal weight

The cost of premature light stimulation is measurable. Sibanda et al. (2020) found that birds stimulated at suboptimal weights showed significantly reduced egg follicle production. Lighter birds within the flock produced up to 5.3% fewer egg follicles compared to birds that had reached appropriate development before stimulation. That differential in follicle production translates directly into reduced egg numbers, compromised fertility, and suboptimal reproductive performance across the flock.

The consequences extend beyond individual hen output. When a proportion of the flock enters the reproductive phase underprepared, the variation in laying onset and fertility compounds the uniformity problem that should have been resolved before stimulation was applied. Reproductive performance lost at this stage is rarely recovered within the same laying cycle.

Accurate, flock-level weight data collected consistently across the 16 to 21 week period is what makes it possible to apply the research thresholds in practice. The decision to stimulate should be validated by weight records, not estimated from visual assessment or age scheduling alone.
